Alka
Yagnik dazzles Toronto!
On October 28th,
hundreds of Indo-Torontonians, gathered at Rose Theatre, Brampton to witness
one of the finest performances by Bollywood’s best-known playback singer, Alka
Yagnik. The show was brought to us by Black Diamond Entertainment who also
encouraged and promoted several local artistes also at the event.
Alka Yagnik,
alongwith Chetan Rana (K-is Kishore show fame) sang some excellent solos as
well as duets to have the audience enthralled and entertained. The famous ‘Ek
do Teen’ and ‘QSQT’ singer Alka crooned several
of her famous Bollywood fast numbers as well as soulful melodies, much to the
delight of the audience.
Among the best-known
playback singers of Hindi cinema, Alka is a record seven-time winner of the
Fimfare Award for Best Female Playback singer
from a record of 35 nominations, a two-time recipient of the National Film
Award as well as several other music
awards listed below. She has sung over 17,000 songs in her career and many of her tracks have featured in BBC’s “Top
40 Bollywood Soundtracks of all time” review.
Alka is classically
trained and has been one of the leading playback singers in Bollywood since the
late 1980s. She began singing bhajans for Akashvani at all India Radio,
Calcutta from the age of six. Her first song was for the film Payal Ki Jhankaar
in (1979), followed byLawaris (1981) with the hit song “Mere Angene Mein”,
followed by the film Hamari Bahu Alka (1982). She got her big break with the
song “Ek Do Teen” from the filmTezaab (1988).
The talented singer has sung in most of the Indian languages and
has lent her voice for three generation of actresses ranging from Hema Malini,
Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Rakhi Gulzar to Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Raveen Tandon,
Manish Koirala, Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Tabu, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Karishma
Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai to Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka chopra, Sushmita Sen, Bipasha
Basu, Katrian Kaif and several others.
